BUILD COMMUNITY TRUST IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM
WE MUST RESTORE PUBLIC TRUST IN THE INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE MEANT TO SERVE THEM
It is no secret that public trust in law enforcement and the justice system has drastically decreased in recent years. The next HCA must make it a priority to work towards reestablishing trust in the justice system. Only when trust is restored can we make meaningful and necessary progress in our community. As HCA, I will serve the people of Hennepin County. Not any political agenda, issue group, or political party, but all the residents of Hennepin County. I have been a public servant my whole life and will continue to do so as Hennepin County Attorney. I pledge that as your county attorney, my office will be completely transparent on charging decisions. I won't let outside entities tell us how we should charge our cases; the county office is filled with incredibly skilled attorneys. We are professionals, we know the facts, and we will always make decisions with Hennepin County's best interests at the forefront. I will act based on fact and the law, nothing else. To increase trust in this office, I also will reestablish the norm that no one is above the law. It doesn’t matter if you are a police officer, politician, CEO, or my next-door neighbor; if you break the law, you will face consequences for your actions.
I WILL WORK TO REBUILD TRUST IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM BY:
Tell the public the truth, always
I will be transparent with those I serve, no matter the issue. Whether we are dealing with increased crime, political corruption, or police brutality, it is my job to give the public the facts.
Treat victims and defendents fairly, without bias
Elected officials make decisions too often based on politics and ideology. I will treat victims and defendents fairly, and pursue justice above any agenda.
Provide public rationale for charging decisions
Create opportunities for public input and discussion
Public servents are tasked with SERVING the people. To do this effectivley requires listening and honest conversations. I will make it a priority to offer the public ample opportunity to provide me with their input. We must work together to create a safer and more just community.
