CONFRONT FENTANYL

IN HENNEPIN COUNTY, FENTANYL DEATHS INCREASED BY 1000% BETWEEN 2015 and 2019

Fentanyl is destroying communities around the nation. The situation in Hennepin County is no different. 135 people died in Hennepin County due to Fentanyl in 2019 alone. The Hennepin County Attorney must confront this crisis head-on to save lives and improve our community.

I WILL CONFRONT THIS CRISIS BY:

  •  Focusing resources on prosecuting large drug distributors and dealers rather than users

We cannot fall back into the cycle of mass-incarceration set in motion by the failed 'War On Drugs' while confronting this crisis. I believe we must focus prosecution and policing efforts on Fentanyl distributors, manufacturers, and financiers rather than addicts. Those who are responsible for creating and supplying the drug that fuels this epidemic must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Addicts and users who are victims of this crisis should be provided treatment and rehabilitation, not unjustified prison sentences.

  • Establishing a better partnership with the US Attorneys' office to go after the largest distributors

  • Lobby state and federal legislators to re-classify Fentanyl as a Schedule 1 Narcotic

  • Changing the current total weight needed to charge a person with first-degree distribution of fentanyl to be consistent with its potency (from 50g down to 0.4g)

  • Form a major drug crimes unit by separating drug and property crimes at the Hennepin County Attorneys' office

  • Reform state case law and current testing practices of fentanyl to better prosecute offenders

  • Enact an internal policy where dealing drugs containing fentanyl disqualifies defendants for our specialty court programs

  • Reignite public trust in their County Prosecutors by improving outreach, presence, and education in the community on fentanyl

I WILL NOT:

  •  Prosecute Marijuana possession or usage

We are extremely close to legalizing marijuana in the state of Minnesota. I believe this is a step in the right direction. I will not use resources to prosecute Marijuana possession usage.
